What is a Pet Calorie Calculator?

A Pet Calorie Calculator estimates the daily caloric needs of dogs and cats based on weight, life stage, activity level, and body condition. Pet obesity is the #1 health issue in veterinary medicine — about 56% of dogs and 60% of cats in the US are overweight or obese (per the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 2026 data). Obesity contributes to arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and shortened lifespan. This calculator helps pet owners determine: (1) how many calories their pet should eat daily, (2) how much food that translates to, (3) calorie target for weight loss.

How Does It Work?

Select pet type (dog or cat), enter weight, life stage (puppy/kitten, adult, senior, pregnant/lactating), activity level (inactive, typical, active, working/athletic), and body condition (underweight, ideal, overweight). The calculator computes: RER (Resting Energy Requirement) = 70 × weight(kg)^0.75, then DER (Daily Energy Requirement) = RER × life stage multiplier × activity multiplier. For weight loss: 80% of maintenance calories.

Formula

Resting Energy Requirement (RER):\nRER (kcal/day) = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75\n\nQuick Estimate: RER ≈ 30 × weight(kg) + 70\n\nDaily Energy Requirement (DER) = RER × Life Stage Factor:\n\nDogs:\n• Puppy (<4 months): 3.0 | 4-12 months: 2.0\n• Intact Adult: 1.8 | Neutered Adult: 1.6\n• Inactive/Senior: 1.2-1.4 | Active: 1.6-2.0\n• Working dog: 2.0-5.0+ | Weight Loss: 1.0 × RER\n\nCats:\n• Kitten: 2.5 | Intact Adult: 1.4\n• Neutered Adult: 1.2 | Inactive/Senior: 1.0\n• Weight Loss: 0.8 × RER\n\nFood Amount = Daily Calories ÷ kcal per cup/can (check food label)\nTreats: ≤10% of daily calories

Frequently Asked Questions about Pet Calorie Calculator

How do I know if my pet is overweight?

The Body Condition Score (BCS): 1-3 = too thin (ribs visible, waist severe), 4-5 = ideal (ribs felt with light fat cover, visible waist), 6-7 = overweight (ribs difficult to feel, no waist), 8-9 = obese (fat deposits, distended abdomen). Aim for BCS 4-5.

Should cats and dogs be fed differently?

Yes. Cats are obligate carnivores requiring high protein, and they should eat multiple small meals (natural hunting pattern = ~10 small prey/day). Dogs are omnivores and can eat 1-2 meals/day. Cats that go >48 hours without eating risk hepatic lipidosis.
