A GPA (Grade Point Average) Calculator computes your cumulative GPA from individual course grades and credit hours — the single most important academic metric used by colleges, graduate schools, and employers. Whether you're tracking your current semester, projecting what grades you need to reach a target GPA, or calculating your cumulative GPA across multiple institutions, this tool handles all GPA scales (4.0 unweighted, 5.0 weighted for AP/IB/honors, and percentage-based systems). Understanding your GPA trajectory early lets you make strategic decisions about course loads and study priorities.
Enter each course: letter grade (A+ through F) or percentage, and credit hours (typically 3-4 for a standard course). The calculator converts each grade to quality points: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, etc. Then: GPA = Sum of (Quality Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits. For weighted GPA, AP/IB/honors courses add +1.0 (A=5.0 in weighted). Semester GPA, year GPA, and cumulative GPA are computed separately.
Quality Points per Course = Grade Points × Credit Hours\nGPA = Σ(Quality Points) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours)\n\nStandard 4.0 Scale:\nA+ = 4.0 | A = 4.0 | A− = 3.7\nB+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | B− = 2.7\nC+ = 2.3 | C = 2.0 | C− = 1.7\nD+ = 1.3 | D = 1.0 | F = 0.0\n\nWeighted (+1.0): A = 5.0, B = 4.0, C = 3.0\n\nCumulative GPA = Total Quality Points (all terms) ÷ Total Credits (all terms)\nTarget GPA: Credits Needed = (Desired GPA × Total Credits − Current Points) ÷ (Target Grade − Desired GPA)
Unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale where A=4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA adds points for advanced courses: typically +0.5 for honors, +1.0 for AP/IB/dual-enrollment. A student with AP courses can have a weighted GPA above 4.0.
Highly selective colleges (Ivy League, Stanford, MIT): 3.8-4.0+ unweighted. Selective state universities: 3.5-3.8. Less selective public universities: 2.5-3.5. Community colleges: open enrollment. Check each school's Common Data Set for specific ranges.
