Estimate flooring material needed and cost for any room. This tool processes all data locally in your browser. No information is ever sent to any server. Completely free, no registration required.
A Flooring Calculator determines how much material you need for a flooring project — hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, or carpet — by computing the square footage (or square meters) of the room, adding the waste factor for cuts and pattern matching, and converting to the number of boxes or tiles required. Flooring is expensive ($3-15+/sq ft for materials, plus installation), and over- or under-ordering has consequences: too much = hundreds in unused materials, too little = project delays and potential dye-lot/color mismatches on reorders.
Enter room length and width (or total square footage if you know it). Select flooring type: hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, tile, or carpet. Each type has a different waste factor: 5% for standard patterns, 10% for diagonal installations, 15-20% for herringbone or patterned tile. For plank flooring, enter plank dimensions and the calculator determines how many boxes to buy. For tile, enter tile size and it calculates the number of tiles plus grout coverage.
Room Area = Length × Width (in sq ft)\n\nMaterial Needed = Room Area × (1 + Waste Factor%)\n\nWaste Factors:\n• Standard layout: 5-10%\n• Diagonal layout: 10-15%\n• Herringbone: 15-20%\n• Patterned tile: 15-20%\n\nBoxes = Ceiling(Material Needed ÷ Sq Ft per Box)\nTiles = Ceiling(Material Needed ÷ Sq Ft per Tile)\n\nPlank Calculation: Width in ft = Plank Width ÷ 12\nPlanks per row = Room Width ÷ Plank Width\nRows = Room Length ÷ Plank Length
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or tile — both are 100% waterproof. Avoid hardwood and laminate in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. Engineered hardwood handles moderate humidity better than solid hardwood but still isn't waterproof.
